Founded by abolitionist Eli Thayer in 1857 and a Union stronghold during the Civil War, the village of Ceredo is located on the Ohio River just west of Huntington and is today primarily a residential community. As this aerial view shows, the January 1937 flood inundated much of the village. The photographer was facing north, with the Ohio River at the top of the photograph. Kenova is the westernmost community in West Virginia. It is located across the Ohio River from Ohio and across the Big Sandy River from Kentucky. Its name is derived from those of the three states. From its founding in 1889, Kenova was primarily a railroad town, and that was still the case when the 1937 flood hit. Here is a view of a flooded Twenty-third Street taken from the Chesapeake and Ohio Bridge over the Big Sandy.
